Production Notes - "Double Helix"
On the night of the nail-biting 2016 California primary I was really
impressed by the progressive-metal instrumental used to introduce Bernie Sanders
prior to his speech. My
smartphone's song-identifier tagged it as a vocal track ("Darkness Rises") by
Daniel Robinson, based on a royalty-free instrumental by Ethan Meixsell ("Double
Helix") to
which Daniel had overdubbed a spoken-word voiceover.
Eventually I made the connection between "Darkness" and "Helix" on
YouTube and here we are. I spent 5 days arranging the original for General MIDI
and another
three on the guitars, bass and mix. My original intent was to go uber-metal
and try to out-do the original, but the mostly synth arrangement kept getting more and
more polished
and I finally left it at that, liking it just as it is. So,
consider this my synth
programming calling card although I still reserve the right to redo the solos
for guitar because I spent two
solid days transcribing Ethan's excellent work on this!
Also: Mad props to Ethan and everyone who's contributed to YouTube's No Copyright Audio Library. You guys are awesome!
