Production Notes - "Aphasia"

Electric Guitar War: Rock > Custom Rules: WANTED: 80s-style original hard rock backing. Judge based on overall RAWK goodness.

After finishing up "Annabella" for the Jimmy Hats, it occurred to me that I haven't posted a full-length, from-scratch original guitar song on MusicianWar for almost three years. Sure, once in while I'd enter the odd synth or cover tune war just to keep my hand in, but for the most part it's been nothing but Team War projects after collaborating with FlippyJ on "The Last Waltz" back in October of 2003.

So it's time to put all that mix and arrangement practice into something a little closer to home.

It's no secret that I find songwriting to be a tremendous grind, but "Aphasia" came together in a couple weeks once I had the basic rhythm bed. From there, things went much faster and I could actually enjoy myself a bit. This song isn't jam-packed with lead guitar from beginning to end; in fact, it's kind of a backing track on steroids and the solos are something that I would like to save for a longer (and future) post. More often than not, it tends to be a new piece of gear or software that gets me going, and in this case it was the unholy trio of a new guitar (my fourth Sabre), the Line6 2.0 GearBox update and the wicked, wicked Demonizer preamp.

"Aphasia" means a loss of words, and I was at a loss for words when I put this together and blasted it over the Mackies for the first time. Although the MP3 really doesn't do this track justice, hearing it in 24-bit is just bloody excellent. It's like... well, maybe it's like what Mutt Lange or Tom Scholz get to hear every day in their studios. I'm not saying this is a difficult song, or even a complex one - because it's not. But it's really really satisfying, and makes me want to RAWK, dammit. I would have loved it if my earlier "That 70's Song" entry could have sounded like this, so let's just think of this one as - That 80's Song, a work in progress.
