Stereo Masking Analysis

Procedure

1. Open the file ("C:/temp/batch.wav" in Cool Edit and play the first few seconds to adjust the volume to a comfortable level (loud, but not clipping) through headphones. View/Display Time Format should be set to Decimal (minutes :seconds :msec).

2. Each sample is 15 seconds long, containing steady noise over a siren warble that fades out. There are 8 samples in all, separated by three second gaps. You will be measuring for the point where the siren "disappears" amidst the noise in each sample.

3. Play the sound file from the beginning, and press Pause when you can no longer hear the siren in sample #1. Write down the time position reported by Cool Edit here:

4. Press Continue, and wait for the next sample. Press Pause when you can no longer hear the siren in sample #2. Write down the time position reported by Cool Edit here:

5. Repeat for sample #3: Time position:

6. Repeat for sample #4: Time position:

7. Repeat for sample #5: Time position:

8. Repeat for sample #6: Time position:

9. Repeat for sample #7: Time position:

10. Repeat for sample #8: Time position:
